NATIONAL BANK OF COMMERCE TAKES AGRIBUSINESS TO NEW HEIGHTS
The greatest long-term potential to improve the quality of life of the Tanzanian population lies in agriculture.  This is highlighted by the government’s initiatives i.e. Kilimo Kwanza.

The National Bank of Commerce (NBC) has agriculture as one of key growth areas but also understands that financing agriculture comes with a number of challenges i.e. understanding the risks associated with agriculture.  Agriculture is unique in that it has two majors risk categories i.e. production and market risk.  The production risk can be managed and mitigated through government and private sector initiatives but the market risk can only be mitigated by our understanding of the market and how well we manage value chain of the specific commodity.

According to Lawrence Mafuru (Managing Director of NBC) Tanzanian agriculture is currently in an ideal position in that the political will and political support to various initiatives are all in place and the challenge is how we as a leading financial institution can play our role in the supporting the public sector in driving the development of our agricultural sector and in turn improve the lives of our people.  The challenge for us is how to grow the agricultural sector to its fullest potential, support stable market conditions which in turn encourage sustainable agricultural development, creating wealth for our clients and turn Tanzania into an agricultural hub for the East African region.

It is for this reason that NBC felt it important to initiate a relationship with the Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness at the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) to collect data, analyse production and specific agricultural markets in Tanzania in terms of producer prices, import and export parity prices.  This will put us in a better position when making business decisions as a bank and also the farmer and agribusinesses involved.

Under this Memorandum of Understanding, SUA and NBC will collaborate on agribusiness research activities for mutual benefits.  Both parties view this collaboration as establishing a research relationship between the two institutions in the areas of agricultural marketing to ensure that agribusiness in Tanzania is fully exploited and improve the existing business opportunities along the Agricultural value chain.  The National Bank of Commerce will support this initiative annually with Shs 36,5million (change amount in words) (Thirty Six Million Five Hundred Eighty Five Thousand Four Hundred Forty Tanzania Shillings Only) per annum over the next five years.
